Finger Technique

In drumming, finger technique is one of the most delicate and difficult skills. It affects accuracy, control in different dynamic ranges, and the ability to play at higher tempos. Fingers can be trained separately, and the method depends on the grip you use. In French grip, the thumb is usually on top of the stick and the other fingers push from below. In German and American grip, the palm covers the stick from above, while the fingers move it from underneath.

Finger technique matters, but it works best in balance with wrist technique. If we use only one technical approach, all the effort falls on one muscle group. If the effort is distributed across several groups, the hands get tired less quickly and more control becomes available. That can also increase a drummer’s speed potential.
