Bass Drum Foot Technique

Bass drum foot technique is important for every drummer. One common approach is called heel up. The heel is raised, so the weight of the leg is concentrated toward the ball of the foot. The beater can remain pressed into the head. To play the stroke, the foot pushes from the pedal, almost like a small jump from the toe, then relaxes and falls back onto the pedal.

It is important not to exaggerate the upward motion. The leg should not move more than the pedal needs. Otherwise the foot loses contact with the pedal, which hurts control and sound quality. The video above is a demonstration by Dave Weckl.

I also recommend Jojo Mayer’s video course Secret Weapons For The Modern Drummer 2: A Guide to Foot Technique. It covers bass drum and hi-hat foot technique in great detail. Jojo Mayer also has a major DVD on hand technique.
